Grand Theft Auto VI: What We Know So Far
As the years pass since the release of GTA V, many are wondering when GTA VI will finally make its debut on consoles and PCs. Rest assured, GTA VI is the next title from Rockstar Games, set to release in autumn 2025.
In February 2022, Rockstar Games confirmed for the first time that they were working on the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto series, although they didn’t officially name it GTA VI. The studio expressed excitement about sharing more details when the game is ready, indicating that development was still in early stages.
On September 18, 2022, Rockstar fell victim to a hacker who leaked several videos of GTA VI. These clips, ranging from a year to just months old, showed that the game was still far from completion. The leaked footage was internal, showcasing discussions among developers addressing bugs, which contrasted sharply with the high expectations of fans, especially regarding graphics—one of the last aspects polished during development.
Despite widespread criticism and disappointment from many about the leaked footage, it’s important to remember that these images are from a game still in progress. Notably, the leaks revealed interesting advancements in the Grand Theft Auto series, including varied NPC sizes, enhancing immersion and making each character more unique than in previous installments. Vehicle interiors will also be significantly more detailed, reminiscent of the Forza racing game series, with features like adjustable steering wheel heights and seat positions tailored to character sizes.
On November 8, 2023, Sam Houser, co-founder and president of Rockstar Games, announced via the company’s official site and social media that the first trailer for GTA VI would be revealed in early December. Rockstar later confirmed that the trailer would debut on December 5 at 3 PM CET. However, the trailer leaked hours before the official release, prompting Rockstar to publish it early.
Playable Characters and Storyline
While GTA V featured three playable characters, GTA VI will have two playable protagonists: a female character named Lucia and her partner Jason. Their story is inspired by the infamous duo, Bonnie and Clyde.
Setting and Time Period
GTA VI is set in modern times in the fictional city of Vice City, heavily inspired by Miami, Florida. While this isn’t the first time players can explore Vice City, it will be the first experience in a contemporary setting.
Currently, fans have pieced together an estimated map of GTA VI based on insights from the trailer, which you can view here.
Why the Long Wait for GTA VI?
The lengthy development time for GTA VI can be attributed to several factors. Initially, Rockstar aimed high with the project, originally codenamed Project America, but opted for a reboot to streamline development.
Additionally, after the controversy surrounding working conditions at Rockstar in 2018—where some employees reportedly worked over 100 hours a week to finish Red Dead Redemption 2—the studio revised its work policies to promote a healthier work-life balance, which inevitably slowed progress on GTA VI.
Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic led to remote work arrangements, impacting productivity and contributing to the 2022 leak.
Release Date and Platforms
Many are eager to know when GTA VI will be released and on which platforms. Rockstar has officially stated that the next Grand Theft Auto will launch in 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version likely to follow. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, clarified that the release window is set for autumn 2025. However, there’s always a chance the date could be pushed back, although Rockstar has been cautious in setting this timeframe to avoid pressure on their teams.
